Smart Devils

When I rigged up an anti-squirrel cage around the peanut butter feeder this past Thursday, I had very little idea whether any of the birds would be able to figure the thing out. To my amazement, the Carolina Chickadees, normally among the fastest learners seemed stymied by the grillwork. But one species took to it immediately. That would be the Ruby Crowned Kinglets. At least one of them figured out the new system right away and have been enjoying the peanut butter pretty much by themselves. Or at least I don't know for sure if anyone else has worked it out. I am impressed: in less than 24 hours a major feeder revision was mastered by a songbird, and the squirrels have not gotten in after four days of operation. What smart little devils!
