It's the dead of winter again, and one of the things that means here at Cary BirdCam is putting up new nest boxes in advance of nesting season. 2009 was a bit of a dud: 6 of 7 boxes saw activity, only 1 saw a finished nest, and there there was no successful nest. So, we will gamely try again. 2010 will see nine boxes, a little better distributed, and most lightly packed with wood shavings so we can permit the illusion of excavation for those species that require it. Both of the new boxes are aimed at the little guys: Carolina Wrens, Carolina Chickadees, and Tufted Titmice. They have small openings which I reinforced with metal rings to deter squirrels. Both are set in from the edge and hopefully this will be deep enough for security purposes. It won't be too many weeks before nest shopping begins. I'm looking for a good season!
