I learned last winter that Hermit Thrushes are wild for peanut butter. And this year a (the?) Hermit Thrush returned to our feeder stations. However, the peanut butter feeder is behind bars. I added an anti-squirrel cage on Christmas Eve (and yes, it does work!) Now, this was initially an obstacle for the peanut butter-loving set, but one after another these birds have figured out how to get a treat. The Carolina Wrens, Ruby Crowned Kinglets, and Brown Headed Nuthatches learned to slip through the bars and take the product from inside. The Northern Mockingbirds, a little larger, now know how to perch, crane their neck, and take what they want. The Hermit Thrush appears to be on the verge of joining the club. This BirdCam photograph from Tuesday shows our friend trying to master the art of perching on the cage. My thinking is that the Thrush is too close to victory to give up. Will it be agile enough to accomplish the perching, lean inside and score? I am beside myself with anticipation.

Thrush to Victory?
