As I write this the powerful winter storm we anticipated has come and mostly gone. We did not realize the Brobdignagian accumulations of frozen precipitation claimed by the various area meteorologists (at least here in Cary,) but it has been more than enough to stir up considerable bird activity. I cleared several areas where the skulkers like to work, and while these birds flocked to those sections of yard, they also had no problems mobbing our feeder stations. The deck is providing attractions galore for birds such as these Slate Colored Junco and Hermit Thrush. I have counted twenty species at the stations this morning, and in prodigious numbers. Jennifer and I found no less than twelve Northern Cardinals and I am certain I have seen upwards of 16 House Finches and as many Juncos. I remain busy restocking feeders and casting seed out and most of all enjoying the spectacle outside. The snow is an annoyance, and the roads will be a mess for the rest of the weekend, but there are delights to be had as a consequence.
