Your Results May Vary

In the two-plus years of my BirdCam experience, I have taken a fair number of pictures at my little collection of bird baths (one pedastal, two one-season ground), but relatively few pictures of bird baths with birds. For example, I have been running one camera at the pedastal for over three weeks now. I am averaging fewer than five photos a day (and surely not all of them involve birds.) And in four days at the new heated ground bath I have taken slightly more photos of visiting squirrels than actual birds. So why so little traffic? The locations are not bad, the water is always clean, and I do see birds every now and then. My conclusion is that there are plenty of other water sources nearby and the birds don't have any particular need to use my more artificial solutions. And that's fine. I merely provide an option and one that is available even on the coldest days. Lesson: don't expect that every neat idea at the bird supplies store will pan out at your location.
