Hints of Summer Gold

Another wonderful sign of spring is the change in plumage of our American Goldfinches (this is our only winter backyard species that changes.) And this molt is underway! I noticed that in yesterday's BirdCam photography at least one of the senior males is showing signs of his brilliant summer colors. The yellows, especially on and around the head, are more pronounced and there's more black on his head. March is always about the time we see the Goldfinches start their changeover, so this guy is a week or two early, but it's a pleasant surprise. The molt still has a ways to go, especially for the younger males, and the nesting season for these birds is deep in summer. For whatever reason, something has touched a trigger. And this is another great case for owning a BirdCam: I would not likely have picked up on this change for some time. I'm delighted I have gotten the news. With more snow and cold in our forecast, any signs of spring are a boost for my morale.
