The snow isn't the only thing that has melted around these parts in the past three days. So have my traffic counts at the feeders. What was abnormally high on Saturday and Sunday, during the worst of the storm, has given way to abnormally low visitation. I have not had to do more than top off tube feeders (and most of that consumption is due to squirrels), and in three days BirdCam racked up a total of only 36 photographs in three separate locations. This suet feeder was barely touched on Thursday. The male Red Bellied Woodpecker appeared in one third of that day's photo take--in one visit. So what is going on? I am fairly certain the regulars aren't at my neighbor's feeders, from what I can see. I'm having to think that perhaps the birds are exploiting natural food choices once the ground cleared sufficiently. Or worse: that something here has unsettled them. Cats? Hawks? We have had instances like this before and I am sure that soon enough the visitation counts will rise to normal levels. But it is a marvelous strange thing to behold.
