Goldfinches Making Ready For Easter Splash

We're only inches from April (okay, just over three days) but the American Goldfinches are seemingly trying to beat that deadline as they molt into summer plumage. The senior male is essentially done with his transformation and I am thinking at least one other in this family group will be similarly attired by Easter Sunday. The heck with Peeps and other yellow Easter basket stuff: make my season with Goldfinch yellow! The group is clearly eating well and I couldn't help but reward their progress with a refill of nyger seed and the addition of a third nyger sock. At least this spring the Goldfinches have been all over the nyger seed and inhaled six ounces in a little over three weeks. Of course, they have continued to ignore the "big" sock (with its pound of seed) for reasons clear only to them. But who cares! It's been a colorful week thanks to these wonderful backyard characters.
