No Hummingbirds Yet

For whatever reasons, my backyard is not the place Ruby Throated Hummingbirds head to in the early part of the season. The first sightings board at Hummingbirds.net showed hummers in our area as early as March 20th, and they were seen at nearby Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve early in April. As usual, I'm still waiting. Last year I saw a stray on April 12th but the birds didn't settle down in earnest until deep in May. And in 2010, in spite of having four attractive nectar feeders up since late March, nary a hummer has been seen. Looks like another long wait before they arrive. I am suspecting that the really attractor is the extensive mass of Trumpet Creeper that grows on the property, and those flowers are not ready for prime time. So we wait. And wait. And wait...
