Every May, certain species descend on our Leatherleaf Mahonias and systematically clean out every berry they can find. It is very entertaining to take a seat and watch them fly in and out like it's some kind of bird version of Chicago-O'Hare. Certainly they are wild for Mahonia. Only certain species are attracted to this fruit: Catbirds, Robins, Cardinals, and Thrashers are particulary prominent. For several days I've pointed the BirdCam at promising spots and only yesterday finally caught signs of bird activity. This American Robin is in the thick of the action. At the rate they're going, my nine bushes will be cleaned out before June 1, and then the frantic fruit-grabbing will give way to more sedentary pursuits. I may need to try the video mode to really enjoy the last hijinks.
