Fair Weather Friend

We have been enjoying periodic feeder visits by at least one Brown Thrasher. These Mimids so far as I have seen are interested only in suet, and are entertaining to watch as they tackle the seemingly smaller suet baskets. What is interesting to me is that the Thrashers, while around all year (in my part of the country, at least), tend only to visit the feeder station in the warm months, and typically between April and September. I have had one photographed visit on any winter day, but this was a freak incident, apparently. How strange it is to have a bird which eschews easy food in the cold times! but I have proof for three winters now and there it is. Whatever they may do, I enjoy knowing they're around, and I especially enjoy their astonishing mimicry--even superior to the Mockingbirds. And Thrashers---visit more often, okay?
