The Wingscapes BirdCam does it again! It captured a moment that truly surprised me, that I might have otherwise missed. I have never seen a Northern Cardinal at a suet feeder. To be sure I have seen Cardinals pick at suet crumbs that fell to the deck, and I have some evidence that they accept suet nuggets left in a platform feeder. But here, in an unfortunately poor photograph, a male Cardinal is working at a suet cake in a basket. Did he need some variety in his diet? What brought on this astonishing behavior, even if it was only for a fleeting moment? This is continued evidence that birds, even those we think we understand, can do some surprising things.Thursday, June 10, 2010
