Summer is very much down to business here on the Piedmont. The temperatures are blazing (still mid 90s), the cicadas are buzzing, the fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high (the last two with great respect to George Gershwin, please)...and the hummers are everywhere. I can now peer at my nectar feeders and wait hardly any time before a little green blur wings in, takes several sips and rockets away. And I have years of experience to know that I can enjoy this spectacle for another nine or ten weeks. All I am unsure of is how many individuals are really tearing around the yard. I suspect two females: I rarely see males at this time of year as the females here are highly aggressive and drive the males off lickety-split. Were it not for BirdCam I would likely miss seeing male hummers at all. History also tells me the family group will spread around the house and thus Mamma and her progeny will be at war at every nectar feeder. Should be fun to watch!
