Another Young Woodpecker

Many of our birds had successful broods this year, and quite a few had successful second ones as well. Yesterday I noticed that a new juvenile Red Bellied Woodpecker is on that list. I hadn't noticed the bird over the weekend and based on its gawky behavior suspect that it only just made its feeder debut this week. But this youngster handled the suet feeder well enough and didn't seem to be intent on pestering the adults for handouts. These juveniles are fun to watch, but they are hardly the most attractive fledglings---they always remind me of albino buzzards. Whatever they look like, we're delighted to see it and know that this has been such a good year for nesting birds here.
