Two days ago I dusted off the anti-squirrel cage and enclosed a sunflower seed tube feeder. So far, it has resisted the squirrels. And, in no time at all, it was mastered by the champion gluttons. I speak of the House Finches and their allies. I really hoped they would get the idea in a couple of days, perhaps led by the chickadees. Instead, the finches climbed inside the same afternoon and once again have the pick of the crop. This is remarkable because the only other use I've had for the cage is on a peanut butter feeder that was never visited by any House Finch. These rascals proved to me that they're cleverer than I expected, and are top shelf allies in the fight against squirrels.Tuesday, July 20, 2010
