Clever Wrens

Over the weekend, BirdCam has been put to work looking for hummingbirds. But it is the other birds who visit nectar feeders that captured my imagination Saturday. Over the last two years various small birds (Chickadees, Titmice, House Finches) have been accustomed to using the nectar feeders as a convenient watering station -- drinking from the ant moat. The Carolina Wrens appear to be going farther and taking advantage of opportunities to catch trapped bees and flies. I've seen them probing the nectar wells. In this photo I'm wondering if the wren is exploring the gap between top and bottom parts of the shell to catch their prey. The wrens are vigorous exterminators all around the house, and especially so on the deck, finding their way under and inside the darndest places in search of insects and spiders. This may be yet another example of that cleverness.
