Some weeks ago I pondered the question of whether suet-loving birds preferred the "far" side of a two-basket feeder (i.e. away from the house) or were indifferent. I've run an observation experiment for three suet cakes and it's abundantly clear most birds do work from that far side. I did occasionally rotate the feeder to eliminate the possibility that a fresher cake wins out (and the birds don't care.) To some extent, this is a function of which side is closer to the trees. But not all the suet eaters come in from that direction. And when the feeder was rotated so that the far side was equidistant from the tree line, birds still stayed as far from us as they could. Well, I can understand that. They always need to minimize hazard and for all they know I am a crazy old coot who eats birds like sno-cones. But I will still feed them regardless of this attitude. And I need something else to think about, now.
