Last summer we had some surprises or at least rare sightings at the feeders. Foremost of these was a May 29 visit of a female Summer Tanager (shown) but we also saw a couple of visits by the suprisingly elusive Blue Jay. This summer: nothing -- only "common" birds. That's the luck of the draw. Even for birds that will accept feeder offerings, conditions need to be just right to bring them in. And my suburban enclave doesn't have enough mojo. No Orioles. No Wood Thrushes. No Cedar Waxwings. No Rose Breasted Grosbeaks. And so on. I put out a wide range of stuff and have made things as bird friendly as possible, but it may take more time and more amendments to build the species count. Will any fall migrants stop by? or do I wait for winter to have a chance at unusual entries?
