Time of Few Bluebirds

It's that time of year... for hurricanes... and for low traffic counts by Eastern Bluebirds. They're abundant at the feeders between January and May. In contrast, from August November they're not coming by nearly as often. The reason is easy to understand: insects. When dinner is fresh and on the wing, the bluebirds don't need my suet really at all. In winter, suet is an easier meal than the few hiding insects. Hence I can't expect to do very well in late summer when insects of all kinds are especially abundant. And data bears that statement out. This is an interesting fact: in three years I of operation I have never photographed a Bluebird on BirdCam in September! 2010 is not looking to be an exception. So I must wait as the fall months mount before I see very many of these colorful characters. I hope it's not too long a wait!
