Working For the Birds on a Nice Day

Thanks to a cold front sweeping in, I enjoyed the nicest Saturday since April 24th (yes, I keep those kind of records) and put the kindly conditions to good use for my bird friends. So up went a new feeder tree in the front yard (3rd feeder station!) and in the back yard I planted a sturdy post that will support a bluebird nest box for 2011. I'm no longer fooling myself that a box too close to a tree will satisfy the bluebirds. The box will center a small but open area. Excluding the fence, there will be at least fifteen feet between the box and anything else. Too bad that I won't know the results for eight months. In any case, this is a project off the "fall" checklist, and one labor of love for the birds.
