Yet again my feeders served as the scene of a crime. This afternoon's patrol revealed a patch covered in down feathers, species unknown. All too sadly, I know the criminal---and the accessory to the crime. The crimp: a cat, seen many times at one feeder location. I didn't worry too much thinking the birds were operating high enough off the ground to be safe. I didn't factor in groundlings, and a juniper bush is simply too close, it seems. That makes me an accessory. Suffice to say, the feeder is being relocated and the pathetic juniper will be removed. This is all a reminder that we must be vigilant in removing as many threats as possible to our bird friends. Hopefully we can reduce our own local crime rates.
