Some of our perennials, absent during the summer, are returned for the cold months. The first of these I spotted is the Northern Flicker, Yellow Shafted race. I last saw them at the suet feeder back in mid-May. They often vanish during the warm months surely thanks to a plenitude of insects. But last year I didn't see a return until November 1st and before that ('07-08) January! I am not sure what the early return means as it is still quite warm hereabouts and bugs are everywhere. So be that, I am glad to see these fascinating woodpeckers back at the feeders. Who else is back from summer vacation?
