We're getting ever closer to that day when first freeze occurs. Before that I'll need to dust off the bird bath deicer gear. When do I need to do it this year? Our first sub-freeze night typically occurs in late October, and in my two decades here that's averaged out to be 10/28. The earliest I've experienced was Oct. 10, 2000, and obviously that record won't be broken in 2010. Already I'm certain we'll be a late freeze: the 10-day forecast shows not a hint of a daily low below 44F. That should do it for October. So what happens then? with four exceptions, I've experienced the latest freeze by November 9th, and the latest of all was a year ago, when we hit 32F at last on November 28th--an astonishing delay. (Of course we made up for it in the unusually cold February to April period!) I expect to save the deicer set up labor for at least three more Saturdays, but one never knows. No matter what, ain't no ice gonna set on my pond!
