Picture this: it's a cold, raw morning; 41 degrees F, rainy. A grumpy homeowner is filling feeders, cleaning a bird bath, and breaking down recycle cardboard. And then... a song emerges from the trees...
O Sweet Canada Canada Canada! And that grumpy mood disappears. For this is the amazingly cheery song of one White Throated Sparrow, one of our winter residents (they, of course, breed in beautiful Canada.) It didn't take long for me to hunt one down in the areas below the feeders, scratching for seeds. Winter was brightened by the Juncos spotted yesterday, but it now sounds much pleasanter with the WTS' on the premises. The winter cast grows, but only two species have checked in. Who's next?
