Apologies for the blurry BirdCam photo, but it shows something exceptionally surprising. I have been taught, and seen, that Northern Cardinals aren't suet feeder birds. Oh sure, they'll accept suet as crumbs or nuggets in platform feeders. But until this photo came along, I'd never had the least evidence that a Cardinal would attempt to cling to a suet basket and get the goodies that way. This one evidently figured out how to do it. It all goes to show that the commonest birds can be full of surprises, and that observant birds can demonstrate great cleverness. I learned another one of those lessons today. Now, will this Cardinal keep up the new behavior?
