The autumn season continues to be absent our winter visitors, but there are plenty of species of interest all the same. Among these are the various nuthatches. Currently the Brown Headeds are on one of their typical road trips, but I am seeing plenty of their larger White Breasted cousions. As usual, they'll be found upside down on the suet feeder: a handy pose when the cake is worked almost to the bottom! We see quite a bit of them in the coldest season, and sometimes in manners. I can say they're often mean tempered with the other birds, and large enough to push others around. I suspect their Vanderbilt Manners book consists entirely of "Fly In, Push Out Diners in the Way, and Hiss at Everyone". Hopefully these days there are enough suet feeding locations here to give everyone else room and avoid this bad etiquette!
