I've gotten reports from Cary's staff naturalist that Red Breasted Nuthatches, an irruptive winter visitor, has been seen in multiple locations in our county. That marks a return after two years of absence. I'm keeping a careful watch (and a listen---for a sort of whiny squeak), but so far at least these very interesting birds have not been here. Frankly, we're about at the point of the year where if I haven't seen it, I am not going to see it, and it's a little frustrating that my neck of the woods seems to miss a goodly number of otherwise feeder-friendly species. Ah well. We shall watch, and wait, and hope.
