Someday I hope to conduct a very careful scientific experiment, comparing number of sightings of Slate Colored Juncos with daily mean temperature. I am convinced that these very interesting birds only show up around here when it's cold (for me.) First sighting of the season? during a weird early November cold snap. Then they disappeared, only to show up again this past week when temperatures plummeted. Yesterday, in a stiff wind and 30+ highs, I saw several pairs hopping about. Darnedest thing. I wonder what they do when it gets warmer? Is that some signal to hide in the bushes? At least for now, it's cold and that will mean scads of Juncos everywhere. It will make the weather a little more bearable.
