Two weeks ago I was obliged by bad squirrel behavior to relocate a window box to a higher altitude, and selected a window on the sunroom at a position that's easily eight feet off the ground. I expected this to at least slow down the tree rats...for, say, two or three months. Somehow they found a way in. I don't know how, but they left evidence in the form of hulled seeds. The titmice, wrens and chickadees don't do this. Squirrels do it a lot. Either they climb the window frames or, worse, leap from some other fixture. So my weekend ahead will include one more task. I need to relocate the feeder to somewhere even harder for them to reach. And if that fails, we'll need an entirely new window box to enjoy. A depressing holiday thought...
