I've had a specialty feeder for a couple of years now designed to serve only thistle seed to Goldfinches. The thing requires the bird to perch upside down (which Goldfinches do quite well) and pull seeds from very tiny slots. However, the Goldfinches never even gave that feeder a second glance. And I eventually put it into storage. But a few weeks ago I hauled it out and gave it another try. And what do you know? A couple of the rascals figured it out and have harvested a respectable amount of nyger seed. I watched one for a time during the Great Backyard Bird Count and was simply amazed at their problem solving ability. So hats off to these clever birds! thanks for restoring my faith!
