Last Weeks of the Siskin

We have enjoyed a pretty good Pine Siskin season since I recorded the first bird here on January 4th. In fact it's so good I can spot a Siskin immediately instead of checking fieldmarks. Not bad for a local uncommoner. The birds we've seen (anywhere from 2 to 4 individuals) have largely accompanied the American Goldfinches on their mission to drain every seed feeder on the property. But this will all come to an end, and fairly soon. During our last irruption two winters ago I observed the last Siskin in the final week of March. Assuming this holds true in 2011 we are down to no more than two and a half weeks of Siskinmania. I'll then savor the relatively lower birdseed bill!

Note: I will not be posting for a few days. As always I appreciate my devoted readers and hope the small interruption is a minor inconvenience. We'll see you again this weekend!
