When I first moved to the Research Triangle 21 years ago, it didn't take a drive too far west or south to come into open farmland. But bit by bit development has taken its course and the spaces have closed up quite a bit. One bird we are therefore seeing much less of is the Purple Martin,
progne subis, that enjoyed structures like that shown in the photo, built most often by farmers. But the Martin towers have come down and this condo is one of the few I am aware of within my orbit of movement. It goes without saying that Martins would have no reason to nest in my part of town. But it is painful to find them farther and farther away, occupying not too many more Wake County backyards. Let's hope that they still go strong in the country that's there.
