In the second "Crocodile Dundee" film the hero scoffs at the switchblade being waved under his nose by a mugger with the memorable line (spoken as he draws his more impressive Bowie ), "
This is a knife". And similarly may be said for the field north of our office block. My piddly backyard, which mysteriously draws Eastern Bluebirds, pales next to this wide openness. And our friend in the center of the photo surely scoffs at me with his own, "
This is Bluebird country!" Our office Bluebird commands a multi-acre meadow which is part of a "frisbee golf" course. It's largely left alone in the summer and is immensely attractive to birds like the E.B. and others that hunt insects on the wing. Even that rusty fencepost commands a view of a wide area. It's textbook habitat and provides object lessons for those seeking these lovely birds. No need to build a frisbee course... just keep an area as open as possible, allow for perching points, and don't wipe out all the insects. Then you'll have "bluebird country"...at least of a sort.
