Pretty Decent Counting

The data from the Great Backyard Bird Count are in and my humble observations ended up aligning very well with the 67 or so lists collected in my home city of Cary NC. I spotted 27 of the 30 most prevalent species here, and 5 from the group of 40 least prevalent. One species really stood out for me, and that is Hermit Thrush. As it turns out, my enthusiastic feeder visitor wasn't on a whole lot of lists:

* On just two lists in Cary (mine being one),
* On just 22 lists in our county (Wake)
* On just 173 lists in North Carolina.

Pretty clearly I'm very fortunate to have such a visitor which is so easy for me to observe.

But overall I am very content with my own work. While I only came across 32 of the list of 70 species picked up in this city, the missing ones were inappropriate to our (micro-) habitat. We have no body of water, no fruit trees, no thick woods, and no wide open meadows. My only glaring exception was the Blue Jay, which is a very infrequent visitor here but overall common bird in the area. Back to burrowing through the data...
