Even before I scrutinized new bird count data for our city and region, I knew I have a very odd situation with respect to "Most Unwanted Birds." Long experience here has shown me Common Grackles hardly ever, European Starlings never, and most bizarrely Blue Jays rarely. Blue Jays come to our feeders so infrequently that I have only obtained
four photographs using BirdCam in four years! Unlike some, I genuinely like this species and believe it to be unfairly smeared as bully and killer. So what gives? why don't I see them? Food choices are not a problem--I put out several items Jays will accept, and at platforms, too. Habitat? We're a typical suburban neighborhood. No problem there. Certainly I have seen them, so for whatever reason they aren't entirely alienated. Predators? C'mon. So I am confounded. Well, now that I've written this I am sure I will get an invasion of Blue Jays to beat the band. For now, the mystery is profound.
