Good News and Bad News

Curiosity always kills the cat. Having observed a young juvenile Eastern Bluebird today, I thought it time to poke my nose in the pole-mounted nest box and see if there really had been a nest in there. The photo tells the story. Oh yes, definitely. A classic bluebird egg lay in the nest bowl. This of course begged a question. No nurturing adult on it? what happened? Is the parent off on errands or was the nest a failure? Probably the latter. There are lots of aborted bluebird nests. I left everything alone and as unmolested as possible. I'm happy as heck that bluebirds used the box, and that is even more to me than the sorrow of a likely nest failure. Try again next year...
