The Big Year, character Brad Harris (played by Jack Black) is shown enhancing his birding-by-ear skills with the aid of some iPod-like setup. His skills are astonishing. As one who believes most birding is audatory, I smiled with approval, but squirmed as my own repertoire is not all it can be. And my mind turned to the BirdJam application that has proven its mettle demonstrating birdsongs. I am wondering if I can build up my own skills with this gadget, say, on a new bird-by-day basis. The experiment is underway. For starters I'm picking birds I know I can encounter soon (Brown Creepers, Winter Wrens, etc.) and build into the spring migrants. Will it work? is my mind too distracted? Can I concentrate and retain that much so quickly? We shall see!
