Fine Workmanship

There's nothing quite like a powerwash to inspire one to take down fragile bird nesting structures, which is exactly what I did at 6-something AM today, atop a strangely unfriendly stepladder. But said structure, our oft-discussed Bird Bottle, was safely removed. And this allowed some detailed study of the contents. This summer a pair of Carolina Wrens used the place and did surprisingly solid work. The lining they installed, made up largely of pine straw, hay straw, dried leaves, and other vegetable matter, clings tightly to the bottle. It looked comfortable, as I'd reckon, for a small and uppity bird. And it didn't look like the usual less than spectacular wren work. It almost seems a crime to pull the stuff out, but if I expect future use of the bottle, that will have to happen. First, more recording of the work. Then...the end of some fine craftsbirdship.
