A Harbinger of Winter

The weather changed significantly as we eased into October 1st, and so did some bird activity. We chanced on a Green-backed Heron on a morning Greenway walk in the west part of town. This species is in theory an all-year-rounder in the Piedmont but I've never remembered seeing one except in the winter months. Nor will I ever likely see one on my property: we're simply not close enough to the water to suit a heron's tastes. In two days I got a serious reminder winter is coming: the hummers are gone, the weather cooled into the non-80s, and now I've seen my first arguably "winter bird."
