Amazing Things at Sylvan Heights

The lovely Jennifer and I took the opportunity of some time off today to take in a visit to a recently discovered treasure in our beloved Old North State. Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park, about two hours' drive from Cary, is a captivity breeding facility which permits visitor viewing and volunteer assistance. The park was established by Mike Lubbock in 2006. Over 117 species (and 1500+ birds!) are allocated into
open air aviaries by continent. Shown is the "Australia" pond. Lubbock and his team have been immensely successful in breeding even the most endangered species and has almost single handedly a couple of exceedingly rare species. The birds are well cared for, are not densely packed, and are surprisingly tolerant of humans. Visitors are allowed to come quite close within aviaries. And I can attest that one Whooping Crane seemed rather attached to your correspondent. What a delightful visit! and so close by...
