A curiosity? A mystery? Whilst perusing recent BirdCam photography, it occurred to me that all of the woodpecker photos showed females. And indeed, running back almost to the beginning of November, this was true. Female downies. Female Red Bellieds. Female flickers. A clean sweep. As I have seen males plenty of times, feeder "ownership" is not the cause. I'm sure it's pure coincidence. Maybe the males showed up on days when the camera was pointed elsewhere, or they found some good eats elsewhere. But it is a fascinating moment all the same. I will be amused to see how long this continues, if it does!
