Well, well, well. Lookee who visited today. This would be our every-now-and-then woodpecker friend, the Hairy Woodpecker. This photo provides the vital diagnostic clue to distinguish him (yes, the female-only woodpecker streak is broken) from the smaller Downy. Look at that bill---it's almost as long as the head is wide. Downies have only a stubby little bill. I can also tell he's a Hairy because he is bigger than a suet cake (that's roughly 6 inches on a side) We don't get these chances frequently. The Hairys are around but for reasons known only to themselves don't visit our feeders much. Perhaps this is akin to a rigorous dieter sneaking off once in a while to get a bacon cheeseburger. Decide for yourselves!
