Winter Lineup: Downy Woodpecker

Today we take a quick look at the most delightful of our winter woodpeckers, and that would be the Downy.  It's certainly a common enough bird: I believe it can be found all year in almost the entirety of North America.  And it readily accepts feeder foods.  Why so delightful?  I confess to finding the bird possessed of what seems like a zany earnestness in its behavior.  This is of course anthropromorphism at its worst.  But tell me the Downy doesn't look a little eccentric in its expressession, and as it maneuvers to just the right perch.  We have one that lands nearby, peers intently at its feeder of choice, bobs its head a little, and in a rapid fling pops over to the feeder.  And I swear it has a crazed look in its eyes.  Pure entertainment.  And they're none too fussy about what we offer.  Good deal!
