Winter Lineup: Red Bellied Woodpecker

No matter the season, the Red Bellied Woodpeckers are frequent visitors to the suet feeder.  I know they're getting plenty of insect protein in our pine wood buffer---they're easy to spot out there and I can see them working the trees hard.  But for whatever reason the suet is a major attractant and they return again and again for a bite.  I think I prefer to see them in winter.  In spring, the RBWs are notorious for beating on siding and are thus a nuisance.  In summer, we often see the young who look too much like buzzards.  It seems that in winter they're at their most attractive point.  So eat up, my friends.  It won't be long before I hear that infernal drumming and regret giving you a meal!
