One has to be impressed by the attractive power of suet. It's a wonder food for the bird feeder. So many species are drawn to it that it's my #1 choice of something to offer. We see a substantial percentage of species work the stuff: only the hardcore seed eaters (e.g. goldfinches, House Finches, juncos) don't find it appealing. And we know it's popular. I put out 123 cakes of suet in 2011. Think of it: birds were whipping through two cakes a week, on average.
What amuses me about our situation is that our birds are Cajuns. All of them. I switched to hot pepper formula a few years ago to discourage squirrels. Since then, I can't interest the feeder visitors with any other formula. The little devils have gotten picky on me and only through the miracle of the Internet can I keep a decent stock on hand.
It amuses me more that suet, a material fundamentally repulsive to me, is so appealing to birds. But I must remember they go bonkers over insects and spiders which are also not part of my dietary hit parade. So be it! This works. I put it out, and birds respond in droves.
A side note before I close. It is time for my annual foray to the east coast where I hope to check in at four or more refuges in search of waterfowl and other birds. While posting may be possible, forgive me if I don't report back until early next week. We'll have some photos and commentary on what I find at that time. See you soon!
