Day One of my January coastal birding expedition has definitely been full of surprises. On the down side, some damage to the car struggling to get into a remote refuge (abandoned that effort---road was horrible). And I came up empty at a site at Alligator River NWR.
But it was my last stop that saved the day. I discovered a fine flat behind Bodie Island Lighthouse. I conclusively ID'd Tundra Swans, Northern Shovelers, Pintails, American Wigeons, Gadwall, Hooded Mergansers, Green Winged Teals, Black Ducks...and two fishing Raccoons!
Tomorrow, I'll take a look at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. This has always been a great location. Look forward to my report Friday night!
