Panning for Gold on Pea Island

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge has always been a gold mine of birds...well, except now that it's a harder mine to work. Hurricane Irene did a good deal of damage to the refuge. Breaches in the dikes drained much of North Pond and the species count was lower than usual in my first walkthrough.

However, I took up the challenge abd panned for the smaller nuggets. In the end I conclusively identified 25 species. And I enjoyed the antics of a large number of Bufflehead Ducks and A Brown Pelican. A good, if not great day. As for tomorrow, rain may disrupt the proceedings. We shall see.
