Towhees Have Drawn the Line

One by one the Piedmont breeders have been singing, setting up territories, checking nest sites and the like.  And of the most vocal these days is the Eastern Towhee.  Our alpha male is especially commanding.  His territory appears to cross the street: he forages with the female of choice on our side of the street (underneath our north feeder tree) but sings from a tree opposite.  Obviously this is not necessarily the eventual location of a towhee nest, but presumably it will happen in that general vicinity.  Towhees are definitely drawn to our property by grace of the excellent low level cover we afford on three sides of the house, and have nested on our property at least once in the past four years (based on my observations of a juvenile that year.)  Perhaps we won't host a nest in 2012 but one can hope the family will visit this end of the territory through the summer!
