Goldfinch Update
Goldfinches are a vexation. Done, I said it. They have either (a) abandoned me altogether, for long stretches, in summer (usually), or (b) Gathered up all of their relatives and cleaned out the tube feeders, day after day, after day. Amazingly, since mid February, it seems I am enjoying the statistically improbable middle ground. I am seeing two (!) goldfinches--a pair, I am sure. And these finches don't seem to have relatives or friends they are on good terms with. I am marvelling at this unexpected stroke of luck. Two goldfinches provide the needed touch of yellow glory, but at a much lower cost (per pound of seed). This will not hold up. Surely other finches will discover the bounty and resume their gluttonous habits en masse. But I will enjoy what brilliant golden days I have...
