The Other Use for Nest Boxes

With something more like the usual winter around these parts (night time temperatures between 25F and 35F) I'm seeing birds taking to their behaviors for dealing with cold nights.  Places to get out of the wind are at a premium and just the other day I spotted our bluebird group checking out my fleet of nest boxes no doubt in search of a dry hole.  This is a reminder that we ought to leave our nest boxes up to provide a little shelter in tough times.  This is not to say our Piedmont birds really see mean winter weather, but comparatively speaking midwinter nights are no darn fun.  And I am just as happy to provide an extra chance to make the birds happy.  I hope they can use the boxes!
